21 May 2008 -

Ports and Waterways Minister Joe Tripodi today outlined plans for future expansion of Port Kembla.

Mr Tripodi announced a master plan for expansion of the port's outer harbour at today's annual

This plan is about increasing land and berthing capacity at the Port as demand for its facilities increases,? Mr Tripodi said.

It won't compromise existing lease arrangements but has the ability to accommodate further expansion, if necessary, well into the future, Mr Tripodi said. It ensures the long term trade requirements of NSW are addressed.

An environmental assessment of the plan will begin in July, to be followed by a planning application for the development as a whole. Once initial approval has been finalised, further approval will be sought for individual projects in accordance with customer demand.

'The port's?inner harbour is now fully leased and we are aware of at least one potential customer looking to establish themselves at Port Kembla,'? Mr Tripodi said.

Any future demand for port facilities will necessitate expansion.

Once approved, this plan will give Port Kembla Port Corporation scope to increase its capacity in accordance with demand.?

Member for Wollongong Noreen Hay said the development will cater to the demands both within the port and across the region.

'As new trade opportunities arise, the region will be able to respond accordingly,' she said.
