New Tug Fleet Base Construction

Work on Port Kembla's new Tug Fleet Base is underway. The dredging of the tug harbour is approximately 95% complete. Approximately 30,000 cubic metres of material has been dredged and the cutter suction dredger that was used to undertake this dredging has now been demobilised off the site.

The land reclamation of approximately 3,000m2 is now completed up to the underside of the future pavement levels. This reclamation will not be asphalt sealed until towards the end of the project so as to allow the installation of underground services throughout the area and so that the asphalt is not damaged by the heavy construction traffic transiting the site to access the breakwater construction. The reclamation has now been protected from wave erosion by the construction of the rock armour revetments around its perimeter.

The breakwater construction is progressing with 145m of the 275m total breakwater length now complete. The breakwater is being constructed in segments with full rock armour revetments being installed to avoid scour of core fill material by wave action.

The detailed design and specifications for the steel tug pontoons and access gangways have been approved by PKPC's engineers and the contractor, McConnell Dowell has now awarded supply contracts for the fabrication of these major items. There are 2 pontoons being installed as part of this contract. Once installed, these pontoons will cater for 4 large harbour tugs. Provision will be made for the future installation of another pontoon to ultimately cater for 6 harbour tugs at this tug fleet base.

Testing of concrete mix designs is currently underway and the contractor is now in a position to award a contract for the offsite precasting of the major breakwater concrete wave wall and service gallery units. A contract for the installation of the steel piling for the pontoons and tug impact fendering is due to be awarded in the coming weeks.

The project is due for completion by November 2011.
