During March, a group of Port Kembla stevedores were recognised for the quality of their work with a prestigious award. P&O Auto and General Stevedores who act for Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics were the winners of the Cargo Quality and Damage Prevention Trophy for 2009.
This award is given to the port which has the least percentage of cargo related incidents compared to the total number of units handled during the year.
WWL Regional Ocean Performance Manager Sunil Dhowan said "Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics sets high Quality standards of its subcontractors so as to achieve their cargo quality vision of zero damage to our customers cargo".
"WWL's cargo quality vision recognizes that the customer is at the centre of every aspect of the process and it is with constant review and improvement of the process that will ensure that customers needs will always be met or exceeded. Cargo Quality is achieved by providing an excellence framework and empowering people handling our cargo to drive the outcomes we require for our customers".
Stevedores are the first to handle the cargo from the vessel or the wharf during discharging and loading. The WWL damage prevention and cargo quality mission is reinforced throughout the year in all ports.
"Stevedore performance is monitored and statistics kept as to the number of cargo related incidents in each port. There are corrective actions and follow up procedures initiated in each case".
"To engage the stevedores in accomplishing our cargo quality vision of perfect outturn of our customer cargo, WWL have instituted a Cargo Quality and Damage Prevention Trophy. For 2009, this was presented to the Port Kembla POAGS team."
