Sunrise over Port Kembla

The 19th and 20th March saw Wollongong host the Ports Australia Environment and Sustainability Working Group Meeting.

Held at the Novotel Northbeach, this function was attended by environmental and planning managers from fifteen ports around Australia as well as representatives from the Royal Australian Navy, various government departments and Ports Australia.

The Working Group meeting included discussions on issues such as marine pests associated with ballast water and hull fouling, climate change and dredging.

Featured were presentations from Alex Chalk (Port Kembla Coal Terminal) on dust management and recycled water and Keith Johnson (Commercial Diving Services) on Hull Surface Treatment Technologies

Attendees took part in a port tour hosted by PKPC with assistance from GrainCorp and Port Kembla Gateway.

The meeting preceded the Waste Reception Facilities Workshop on 18th March. This workshop allows regulators, shipping industry, waste contractors and ports to consider the type and quality of waste services that are provided for ships at our ports and identify potential improvement opportunities.
